Connecting Your Scanner (Hardware Setup)

EasyScan works with any barcode scanner that acts as a "Keyboard Wedge" (Human Interface Device / HID). This covers 99% of USB and Bluetooth scanners.

1. The "Notepad Test"

Before using EasyScan, test if your scanner is working correctly:

  1. Connect your scanner to your computer/tablet.

  2. Open a blank Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) file.

  3. Scan a product barcode.

  4. What should happen: The number should appear on the screen, followed by an "Enter" (jumping to a new line).

    • If numbers appear: Your scanner is working.

    • If nothing appears: Your scanner is not paired or out of battery.

    • If numbers appear but no "Enter" key is pressed: You need to configure your scanner.

2. Configuring "Enter" After Scan

EasyScan requires your scanner to "press Enter" automatically after every scan. This submits the data so you don't have to touch your keyboard.

  • How to fix: Consult your scanner's manual for a barcode labeled "Add Carriage Return (CR)" or "Add Enter Key Suffix".

  • Scan that configuration barcode once.

3. Mobile Device Setup (iOS/Android)

  • Camera scanner: If you don't have a physical scanner, use the EasyScan within the Shopify Mobile app. Tap the Scan Icon next to any input field to use your phone's camera.

  • Bluetooth scanner: If using a Socket Mobile or similar device with an iPad:

    • Put the scanner in "Keyboard" (usually by scanning a specific barcode in the manual).

    • Pair it via Bluetooth Settings.

    • Tap the EasyScan input field so the cursor is blinking before you start scanning.

4. Supported Hardware

  • Any generic USB scanner from Amazon ($20+) should work perfectly.
