What it does
When Moving Average Cost is enabled, EasyScan recalculates Shopify's cost per item every time you receive inventory on a purchase order. The new cost is a weighted average of the stock you already had on hand and the units you just received, so Shopify's profit and margin reports reflect what your inventory actually cost.
For example, if you have 10 units on hand at a cost of $5.00 and receive 10 more at $7.00, the cost per item becomes $6.00.

How to turn it on
Open Settings and select the Inventory tab
In the Purchase orders card, find the Shopify cost per item section

A confirmation explains that this changes the cost data behind Shopify's profit and margin reporting — confirm to enable
How the average is calculated
Before applying your receive, EasyScan captures the item's current Shopify cost and total on-hand quantity, then blends in the newly accepted units:
New cost = ((on-hand quantity × current cost) + (accepted quantity × PO unit cost)) ÷ (on-hand quantity + accepted quantity)
A few details worth knowing:
Only accepted units count — rejected units never affect the cost
Tax-inclusive purchase order costs are converted to ex-tax before averaging
Purchase orders in a supplier currency use the exchange rate locked on that PO
The result is rounded to your store currency's precision (for example 2 decimals for USD, 0 for JPY)
What it never changes
Supplier catalog costs — the supplier-specific cost per item you maintain in EasyScan stays separate; receiving never overwrites it
Negative corrections — lowering previously received quantities does not change Shopify cost
Your inventory receive — if a cost update can't be applied safely, the stock receive itself still saves normally
When a cost update is skipped
EasyScan puts inventory accuracy first. If a cost can't be updated safely, the receive completes as normal and a warning appears on the purchase order so you can adjust the cost manually in Shopify if needed. Common reasons a cost update is skipped:
Someone else changed the item's cost or stock while the receive was in progress
The same item had both positive and negative received-quantity changes in one save
The purchase order's currency, exchange rate, or tax information was missing or invalid
Shopify returned an error for that item
Each receive updates costs for up to 100 distinct items. Your inventory quantities are always correct even when a cost update is skipped.
